Everything and anything to do with the Stanlely Cup race in here....

These are the teams that have qualified for the playoffs

The 2022-23 NHL season is coming to a close and teams have about a month or so until the playoffs begin. The race toward the Stanley Cup Playoffs figures to be another competitive one but we’re already starting to see teams clinch spots. Here we’re going to go over the NHL standings and update you with teams that have clinched a berth into the playoffs this season.
Update — Five of the 16 teams in the field for the playoffs have clinched. The next teams up include the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights. The five teams in the postseason as of March 29 are all from the Eastern Conference.

Team that have clinched 2022-23 Stanley Cup Playoff berth

Boston Bruins

Date clinched: March 11
The Bruins defeated the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Islanders lost to the Washington Capitals on Saturday. That was enough for the Bruins to clinch a playoff berth with 18 games to spare left in the regular season. The Bruins are going to run away with the Presidents’ Trophy this season. Boston is nearly 20 points clear of the Toronto Maple Leafs for first place in the Atlantic Division and 11 points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes overall in the NHL standings as of March 11.
As of this writing, the Bruins are favorites to win the Stanley Cup at +380 on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Carolina Hurricanes

Date clinched: March 23
The Hurricanes clinched the second spot into the playoffs behind the Bruins after the Florida Panthers lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on Thursday night. Carolina had lost to the New York Rangers earlier in the night 2-1, so the Canes kind of backed into a berth. It’s going to be tight fighting to remain in the top spot in the Metro division. The New Jersey Devils are just two points behind the Hurricanes and Rangers are six points behind. Carolina does have a game in hand on New Jersey and two games on New York.

New Jersey Devils

Date clinched: March 25
The Devils are back in the playoffs, just their second trip in the past 11 seasons. Before that span, the Devils had gone to the Stanley Cup Final in 2012, losing to the Los Angeles Kings. This is pretty easily the best Devils team in the regular season since that season. New Jersey also has an outside shot of catching Carolina for first place in the Metro division. The Devils got their on the backs of Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier and Dougie Hamilton. Hughes has a shot at being a Hart Trophy finalist, entering the second-to-last week of the season with 86 points (40 goals, 46 assists).

Toronto Maple Leafs

Date clinched: March 27
The Leafs got in with the Florida Panthers’ loss to the Ottawa Senators on Monday. Toronto clinches its seventh straight berth into the Stanley Cup Playoffs and are on a collision course to face the Tampa Bay Lightning again in the first round of the postseason. Last year, the Leafs fell in seven games to the eventual Eastern Conference champions.

New York Rangers

Date clinched: March 27
The Rangers also got in when the Panthers lost on Monday and are back in the playoffs after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021-22. The Rangers have a shot at home-ice advantage in the first round, a series likely to be played against the rival New Jersey Devils. The Rangers haven’t gotten the same level of goaltending from Igor Shesterkin this season but added Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane in what is very much an all-in play. In any case, if Shesterkin can stop goals in the playoffs the Rangers’ offense will be tough to keep up with on a nightly basis.

Vegas Golden Knights

Date clinched: March 30
The Golden Knights became the first team out of the Western Conference to clinch a berth into the playoffs in 2022-23. Vegas got in on a Predators loss on Thursday night. The Golden Knights have a shot at sealing up the top seed in the conference. They could also fall as far down as third place in the Pacific Division by the end of the regular season. That’s how close the West standings are right now.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Date Clinched: April 1
The Bolts are back in the postseason for a sixth straight season in search of their third Stanley Cup in the past four seasons. Tampa Bay’s streak of Cups came to an end at two in a row after losing to the Colorado Avalanche last season. The Lightning aren’t nearly the same dominant team but know all they needed to do was get in to have a chance at making another run. Tampa Bay will meet the Toronto Maple Leafs again in the first round; the Bolts defeated Toronto in seven games last season.

The 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs will begin on April 17, so we’re about 10 days away from playoff hockey. Despite being that many days away from the postseason, we still have very little clarity on how the matchups will shake out. That’s a testament to how competitive the NHL has grown in 2022-23. Below we’ll take a look at the updated playoff bracket for the Eastern Conference and Western Conference with some analysis.

Eastern Conference playoff bracket

No. 1 ATL — Boston Bruins — 133 points
WC2 MET — New York Islanders — 91 points
No. 2 ATL — Toronto Maple Leafs — 109 points
No. 3 ATL — Tampa Bay Lightning — 96 points
No. 1 MET — Carolina Hurricanes — 111 points
WC1 MET — Florida Panthers — 92 points
No. 2 MET — New Jersey Devils — 110 points
No. 3 MET — New York Rangers — 107 points

Pittsburgh Penguins — 90 points
Buffalo Sabres — 87 points
Note: Bracket is updated as of April 11.
Update — So things have finally gotten a bit interesting in the East Wild Card. The Islanders lost on Monday night, the Panthers picked up a point and so did the Sabres. With a few games left, the Islanders are in the worst position. The Penguins control their own destiny. Pittsburgh wins two games and it is in. The Panthers are also in with a win in their season finale vs. the Hurricanes.
The ‘Canes need a win to secure the top seed in the Metro. If Carolina splits the last two games and the Devils win out, New Jersey gets the No. 1 seed from the division. The Rangers can’t jump the Hurricanes but can still get home-ice advantage if the Devils falter a bit.
Update — The Senators were officially eliminated from playoff contention, so the Pens, Isles and Panthers remain for the East Wild Card. Everyone is off Friday and all three teams play Saturday.
The race in the Atlantic Division is basically decided. The Bruins are the top seed by a wide margin and the Leafs should host the Bolts in the first round. Toronto will almost definitely get home-ice advantage.
As for the Metro, the Canes, Devils and Rangers remain three points apart each. So there’s a chance we see all three teams move a bit before the end of the regular season. The Devils are the best of the road teams and the Hurricanes are very good at home.
The Wild Card is down to three teams with the Pens, Isles and Panthers. Pitt is behind by a point and trail in terms of regulation wins. The Penguins also have an easy schedule down the stretch. All three teams won’t have a rough time, so it could come down to tiebreakers or settle like the standings are now.

Western Conference playoff bracket

No. 1 PAC — Vegas Golden Knights — 107 points
WC2 CEN — Winnipeg Jets — 95 points
No. 2 PAC — Edmonton Oilers — 105 points
No. 3 PAC — Los Angeles Kings — 100 points
No. 1 CEN — Colorado Avalanche — 104 points
WC1 PAC — Seattle Kraken — 98 points
No. 2 CEN — Dallas Stars — 104 points
No. 3 CEN — Minnesota Wild — 100 points

Calgary Flames — 91 points
Nashville Predators — 90 points
Note: Bracket is updated as of April 11.
Update — The Flames were eliminated with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Predators on Monday night. The Preds still have two games left and an outside shot at jumping Winnipeg. If the Jets lose their last two games and Nashville wins out, the Preds get in as the second WC. The rest of the field is set but seeding is yet to be decided and should come down to the final games of the season for most of the teams.
Update — The Preds enter this weekend a point out of the Wild Card in the West. Nashville has as good a shot as any to sneak into the playoffs again. The Flames only have three games remaining while the Preds and Jets have four games left. Nashville and Calgary face each other on Monday in what is essentially going to feel like a playoff game. The Kraken have already clinched at least a Wild Card spot in the playoffs, so it’s down to the last spot in the West.
The Avs, Wild and Stars are all tied at 98 points but the Avs have a game on both Minnesota and Dallas. Colorado still has the advantage with a game in hand. Worst case is the Avs get home-ice against the Stars or Wild in the first round. In terms of teams who need home-ice in the first round, the Wild are a much better home team. Minnesota should push the last stretch of games. The Avalanche may ease off the pedal a bit. Colorado is strong on the road so may not favor home-ice advantage as much. Colorado won nine of 16 games on the road last year during the run to the Stanley Cup championship.
The Oilers are a point behind the Golden Knights but Vegas has a game in hand. The Kings aren’t 100% in the clear for the top-3 seeds in the Pacific. If L.A. were to lose out and the Kraken were to win out, Seattle would jump out of the Wild Card. The Kings have to at least split their final four games to feel good about staying in the No. 3 spot in the division. Dropping down could mean having to face the Avs, Wild or Stars in the first round (which may not be that bad anyway).
The Calgary Flames and Jets are tied at 89 points heading into the final stretch of games. Winnipeg has a game in hand on Calgary, which provides an advantage. Seattle is up five points and has games on both the Flames and Jets, so chances are the Kraken will be the first WC in the West.

How has East gone so far: April 19

Through the first set of Game 1s, things are bit upside down. The Bruins and ‘Canes took care of business entering Game 2. The Rangers and Lightning pulled off “upsets” in their respective Game 1s on the road. The Devils didn’t look as bad as the Leafs, but need to figure out the power play fast after going 0-for-5 in Game 1.

Cheap shots all around....

The call on the ice was a major penalty on Makar for the hit. McCann would go down and leave the game, unable to return. Jordan Eberle would go on to score the game-winner in overtime to give Seattle a 3-2 win and tie the series 2-2. The hit appears to be very late and McCann wasn’t ready since the play had been whistled dead.

Makar will likely get suspended for at least Game 5 of the series, which is Wednesday back in Colorado. Without Makar in that game, the Avalanche could struggle to maintain offensive zone time and get the puck up the ice. The Avs’ defense is deep with Bowen Byram and Devon Toews, plus Sam Girard. They’ve also got a lot of experience playing without Makar this season. Still, it’s not a great spot in a must-win contest in Game 5. Dropping that game and going back to Seattle with the Kraken in position to advance would be less than ideal for the defending champions.

No. 1 PAC Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights are the first team to advance from the 2023 NHL playoffs and the Western Conference. The Knights will await the winner of the Oilers-Kings series in the second round. Vegas was able to dispatch the Winnipeg Jets in five games in the first round with a 4-1 win in Game 5 on Thursday night at home. All-Star forward Chandler Stephenson was huge for the Golden Knights in the series, scoring four goals with four assists in five games. The return of Mark Stone could also be the key to a long playoff run. He also had eight points in the series with three goals.

Sunday update...two big games tonight

The 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs are headed to the second round. The field is slowly being settled and we’ve earned three different Game 7s to close out the first round of the tournament.
Here’s a look at the updated playoff bracket as the second-round field settles. We don’t have a start date for the next round, but it will likely be May 2 once the final first-round series concludes.

2023 NHL playoff bracket: Second Round

Eastern Conference

No. 2 ATL Toronto Maple Leafs vs. TBD
No. 1 MET Carolina Hurricanes vs. TBD

Western Conference

No. 1 PAC Vegas Golden Knights vs. No. 2 PAC Edmonton Oilers
No. 2 CEN Dallas Stars vs. TBD
Two of the top seeds are headed to a do-or-die game just to advance out of the opening round. In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins host the Florida Panthers, with the winner advancing to face the Maple Leads. In the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche host the Seattle Kraken, with the winner advancing to face the Stars. The third Game 7 will see the New Jersey Devils host the New York Rangers, with the winner advancing to face the Carolina Hurricanes.
